Zhang Guoyong, stemmed from Jiangsu, was born in Shanghai in July 1957.

　　He is the first class national conductor and member of National Committee of the eleventh session of the CPPCC. In 1957, he studied conducting in Shanghai Conservatory of Music from Professor Huang Xiaotong, the famous conductor and educator. He graduated in 1983 and stayed there to teach until 1993 when he was sent to Moscow state Tchaikovsky College of Music as a student of Gennady Rozhdestvensky. During this time, he had more than one opportunity to conduct Russian National Culture Symphony Orchestra, Russian Philharmonic Orchestra, Voronezh Symphony Orchestra etc. and had his recordings made. In 1997, he was granted doctor degree by Moscow state Tchaikovsky College of Music and held concert in its famous hall. His conducting was a hit among Russian counterparts and audience. Gennady Rozhdestvensky said that Zhang had my highest score ever and there would always a place for him in the world arena.

　　Shortly after his graduation, he took part in Shanghai Spring Festival with his band and gave his first performance in Shanghai Spring Festival as conductor for first time, which was awarded. In over 20 years, Zhang Guoyong was in almost every Shanghai Spring Festival and performed many works, including‘Butterfly Lovers’, especially in 2009, 50th Anniversary of‘Butterfly Lovers’, he made a success performance with Japanese violinist and Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.
