¡°New Dream on the Sea VII¡± concert, held by
Shanghai Musician Association, is the most important part of the music festival.
Seven art songs and five orchestral new works have been played in this concert.
Music forms of art songs are the highlights in this event. Liangzhen Zhu¡¯s
works, baritone solo Let Me Hold Your Hand (lyric wrote by Huang Yuyan) and
tenor solo You are the Far-off Light in My Dream (lyric wrote by Zhang Haining),
are catchy. They expressed a strong feeling about life, patriotic and homesick
emotions respectively. Xiao Leng¡¯s tenor solo Nostalgia is based on the
poem of Yu Guangzhong. Rao Pengcheng¡¯s To Find a Star and Li Geli¡¯s Saying
Good-bye to Cambridge Again are based on Xu Mozhi¡¯s poem. These literature based
songs reflect the spirit of pursuing literary mood in musical composition
nowadays. The high pitch parts of the songs clearly have some challenges for the
new singers.
Qiming Lv¡¯s orchestral overture No.4 Thunderstorm is drawn
from Cao Yu¡¯s same name literary work. By sound of music, Qiming Lv successfully
revealed the protagonist¡¯s human nature distortion and alienation to the
audience---groaning in the darkness, shouting in the thunderstorm, death
struggling and perishing. Conception of Lu Pei¡¯s Xianghe Song comes from
the traditional musical style ¡°Xianghe song¡± and ¡°Xiang He Da Qu ¡± in Han-wei
period. Its structure conforms to the ¡°yan, qu, qu, luan¡± patterns of ¡°Xiang
Xiang He Da Qu¡±. It brought the audience a brand new auditory experience by
using urheen, lute, piano and orchestra concerto as its orchestration. Based on
the Micro-Concerto concept, the yong composer Yiwen Shen
infinitely expands short pentameter and oboe melody in the ¡°First Orchestral
Essay¡±. These five new original orchestra works are uniquely subtly conceived.
They reflected the different composing angles and exploration spirits for
contemporary humanism in different languages.
Small Defects of Lou Lan Cannot Obscure Great Virtues

Loulan, the original musical created by
Shanghai Conservatory of Music, depicts the tragic love story between Loulan
princess Archies and a craftsman Nagy who fight together bravely against
enemies and die heroic deaths to protect the country Loulan against Hun¡¯s
invasion. After watching this two-episode musical, I admit that the well-knit
and dramatic plot development greatly increases its brilliance. In particular,
the plots are linked well together. Especially, the plots began with princess
being back from Heaven Pool to find her maid a Hun¡¯s spy. She called on people
to channelize and remove. Then she seduced Hun¡¯s King for more available time,
assassinating their machinator. In the end, she sacrifice themselves and
flooding Hun¡¯ s army through sluicing. The series plots are link by link. What
need improve is as follows: some sluggish plots in Episode One, and
unclear description of methods by which the princess finds Heaven Pool and
defeats Huns at the beginning of Episode Two.
Although the story happened in Loulan, a country in western region, the aria
of whole musical bases on pop music, embellished by west regions music, blending
elements of rock, R&B and ¡°Loulan-style¡±, all in order to produce the effect
of ¡°symphonic pop¡±, which makes it more vivid and more popular in young people.
The most impressive scene belongs to the ¡°channelization¡± part in Episode Two,
dividing the platform into three layers. The upper showing Nagy leading people
to channelize, the middle princess leading people to transfer and the lower
Hun¡¯s King preparing to marry the princess. The music takes on three themes
respectively at first, and makes a great integration of them at last, which is
seen to ¡°play¡± brilliantly. It is worth mentioning that the music throughout the
whole performance is performed by a live band. Although sometimes fairly
loudness outweighs the singing and dialogue, undeniably speaking, the
performance served a spectacular show pleasant to both eyes and ears to the
audience. Such arrangement embodies the professional advantages of Shanghai
Conservatory of Music, and is also rare to see in Chinese original musicals.
