¡¡¡¡Introduction of Works (Ranked byOrderof Performance)

¡¡¡¡Orchestral "Jiangnan in Dream composed by Weng Chigeng

¡¡¡¡In Li Bai¡¯s dream ofJiangnan, he paid a visit to Tianmu Mountain to look for trace of Xie Lingyun; in Bai Juyi¡¯s memory of the south, what leaves the bestmemory to him is Hangzhou; for us,¡°Jiangnan in Dream¡± is the reflection of attachment to the old land¡¡ the structure of music composition can be regarded as incomplete sonata form, and it is determined by fragments of dreams. The first distant adagio is the prelude to the theme, and the passionate section of prelude is formed by thoughts of the composer from the far to the near; the first allegretto can be regarded as the first theme of sonata form. In this part, the middle piece in ¡°Listening to Whistling of Pines¡± of A¡¯Bing reflectsunyielding characters. The cantabile adagio is the second theme, which is originatedfrom folk songs of Zhejiang, such as ¡°Pick Tea Leaves in Clockwise Direction¡± and ¡°Pick Tea Leaves in Anti-clockwise Direction¡±. In these songs, tea aroma is also expression of dreamland; the main part of development is the fugue of music played by a brass band, which comes from musical sound of coil bobbin. Three changes of fugue themes are in inverted image relation in which Chinese lute and string are main sound. Daring to be the first and taking the lead is the musical characters that the composer wants to express; there is no complete recapitulation but false representation of the second theme. The musical composition ends with verrals topics in the introduction part to reappear the whole movement. Jiangnanexists in dreams while old haunts exist in memories forever.

¡¡¡¡Symphony prelude "Morning Bell of Huangpu River"composed by Xu Mengdong

¡¡¡¡Surging Huangpu Riverin days and nights incorporatesall riverswith broad breast, which has been the symbol of Shanghai spirit; while clock of Custom House, completed in the riverside of Huangpu Riverin 1992 and struck in the New Year¡¯s Day of 1928 for the first time, carries vicissitudes of memory of several generations in Shanghai with its sonant and distant bell, tells unique birth and evolutionof ¡°Shanghai-style culture¡± which serves as a link and integrate Chinese and western culture in culture exchange between China and foreign countries in modern times.

¡¡¡¡"Morning Bell of Huangpu River"weaves Chinese traditional music elements into figure texture of orchestra by orchestrationof orchestral colors, and provides rich change and flow, then integrates several fragments of famous Chinese and foreign music with symbolic significance; while two different images namely the theme of magnificent and beautiful Huangpu Riverand core materials run through the song. The work tries to display the intention and image of ¡°Shanghai-style culture¡± hidden in above ¡°Huangpu River¡± and ¡°bell¡± in the form of symphony.

¡¡¡¡Symphonic poem "Origin of Revolution" composed by Xia Liang

¡¡¡¡In the ancient lands of the east, red tide is surging. Since birth of Chinese Communist Party in Shanghai, it has developedand grew strongerafter arduous struggles. Feudal dynasty are overthrown and great cause of establishing a state has been achieved in the land of China finally.

¡¡¡¡Cold and pale tone of woodwind and brass is adopted for prelude of the work to present a deep and vacant atmosphere. In order to show subject of the work better, and pay attention to resonance between music and audiences at the same time, melody of related red classic songs is used in main structural part of the work after the prelude. In the paragraph onestablishment of the Communist Party, the fragment of main melody of InternationalAnthem is adopted firstly for variation. Main melody of Sing Folk Song for CPCcreated by famous composer Zhu Jianer is introduced in the latter half with artistic processing of melodic development and instrument skills. In the development part of the work, melodic fragment of Military Song of the New Fourth Armyis added. In the process from weak to strong of musicgradually, the course that red force developed and became stronger from weak is displayed. Finally, theme fragment of the national anthem of People¡¯s Republic of China is applied to show the birthof new China simultaneously. The melody is described through different variation and contrapuntal voice. The work ends in magnificent climax.

¡¡¡¡Symphonic painting "Laughter from Shikumen"composed by Cui Xin

¡¡¡¡Shikumen is a unique residential form in Shanghai, and o irreplaceable urban landscapeas well, which creates a unique lifestyle and cultural charm. The music takes Shanghai opera, Pingtan and Jiangnan string music as basic fabric, with contemporary aesthetic perspective and artistic expression. In the variation, parallel and staggered chanting, collision and fusion, independent or synchronized music scene with multiple lines and colors, different life and humanistic feelings of this unique urban space are described stereoscopically by symphony of orchestra to perceive and advocate rich Shikumen culture of Shanghai, praise urban spirit with rich connotation in Shanghai and high-spirited contemporary spirit.

¡¡¡¡In the twilightand colorful dusk, happy laughter and cheerful voices of Shikumen integrate in the symphony of metropolis; in the vast shadow of night, the lanes are full of love. Myriad lamps of the city with distinct charms light up the tomorrow!

¡¡¡¡Orchestral music "Peak of Shanghai"composed by Zhou Xianglin

¡¡¡¡¡°¡openness, innovation and embracing have been the most strikingcharacter of Shanghai, which is a vivid reflection of development and progress of China in new times.¡±

¡¡¡¡Beautiful modern buildings erect in the ever-changing Shanghai. These sparking and magical buildings show unparalleled elegant temperament and indomitable king character, like rockets soaring into the sky and giant pillar falling from the sky. They are new landmarks of Shanghai, new altitude of China, and even the great symbol that the dragon takes off in new times.

¡¡¡¡The song tries to portray the urban character of openness, innovation and embracing of Shanghai, and reflect the brightcity embracing future with open arms, by description of ¡°urban skyline¡± soaring into the sky.

¡¡¡¡Orchestral music "All Rivers Rushing into Sea"composed by Xu Shuya

¡¡¡¡It is said in "Huai Nan Tzu-GeneralExpound" that"Rivers flow into the seaeventuallydespite of different sources¡±. Even though many rivers originates from different places, but all of them flow to the sea in the end eventually. The babbling brooks originate from all sides, they keep flowing without hesitation, fear or retreat in the case of dangerous area, rocks and windstorms; after overcoming difficulties and obstacles, these rivers turns and twists, accumulategradually, and rush to the sea grandiosely. After the development of 70 yearsfrom foundation of People's Republic of China, the metropolisShanghai is marching toward the new future in 21stcentury with great momentum just like the sea embracing all rivers.
