¡¡¡¡The 2018/19 season marks Jaap van Zweden's inaugural season as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic. As a top-tier solo violinist himself and once the youngest violinist as the concertmaster of the Concertgebouw Orchestra at age 18, Jaap van Zweden's cooperation with the winner of the Isaac Stern International Violin Competition will be very interesting. After the burning ambition of the short Ruy Blas Overture, Jaap van Zweden will present the two best-known E minor orchestral works: Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto and Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony.

¡¡¡¡Jaap van Zweden has been active in international podiums in Europe, Asiaand America over the last decade. The 2017¨C18 season marks a major milestone undoubtedlyas he completes his ten-year tenure as music director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra,and serves as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic simultaneously, anticipating his inaugural season, in 2018¨C19, when he becomes 26th Music Directorof the Orchestra. He continues as Music Director of the Hong Kong Philharmonic, thepost he has held since 2012. Highlights of his 2017¨C18 season include return engagements to the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Amsterdam¡¯s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, and Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra.

¡¡¡¡Maestro van Zweden has also cooperated as guest conductor with Cleveland and Philadelphia Orchestras; Boston, London, and Shanghai symphony orchestras; Los Angeles, Vienna, Berlin, and Munich philharmonic orchestras; Orchestre national de France; and Orchestre de Paris. In 2015,he launched the annual SOLUNA International Music & Arts Festival with the Dallas Symphony, and embarked on a four-year project with the Hong Kong Philharmonic to conduct the first-ever Hong Kong performances of Wagner¡¯s Der Ring des Nibelungen, to be released on Naxos Records. In the summers of 2017¨C19,he serves as principal conductor of the Gstaad Festival Orchestra and Gstaad Conducting Academy.

¡¡¡¡Jaap van Zweden¡¯s acclaimed recordings include Stravinsky¡¯s the Rite of Springand Petrushka, Britten¡¯s War Requiem, and complete cycles of the Beethoven, Brahms, and Bruckner symphonies. He recorded Mahler¡¯s Symphony No. 5 with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Mozart piano concertos with the Philharmonia Orchestra and David Fray. His celebrated performances of Wagner¡¯s Lohengrin, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, and Parsifal (the last of which earned him the prestigious Edison award for Best Opera Recording in 2012) are available on CD and DVD. On the Dallas Symphony¡¯s record label, he has conducted symphonies by Tchaikovsky, Beethoven, Mahler, and Dvo?ák, as well as the World Premiere recording of Stucky¡¯s August 4, 1964. A recording of Jaap van Zweden and the New York Philharmonic¡¯s performances of Beethoven¡¯s Symphonies Nos. 5 and 7 was released on CD and for streaming and download in February 2018; the release launched the Philharmonic¡¯s partnership with Decca Gold, Universal Music Group¡¯s newly established U.S. classical music label.

¡¡¡¡Born in Amsterdam, Jaap van Zweden was the youngest-ever concertmaster of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He began his conducting career in 1995 and in 2012 was named Musical America¡¯s Conductor of the Year. In 1997 he and his wife, Aaltje, established the Papageno Foundation. The Foundation supports families of children with autism.

¡¡¡¡Nancy Zhou

¡¡¡¡Nancy Zhou, born in 1993, is a native of San Antonio, TX and a graduate of Harvard University. Influenced in music by her father and teacher, Nancy gave her orchestral debut at the age of 9. She hasever studied with Miriam Fried at the New England Conservatory.

¡¡¡¡The second prize winner of the 2017 Isang Yun Violin Competition and laureate of the 2012 Queen Elisabeth Competition and 2015 Jean Sibelius Violin Competition, Nancy has performed extensively with international orchestras including the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, Munich Symphony, St. Petersburg Philharmonic, National Orchestra of Belgium, and the San Antonio Symphony. As a recitalist, she has performed across in predominantly US and Asia and at such festivals as the Verbier Festival, Ravinia Festival, and the Festpiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Since 2008, Nancy has been a recipient of the Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation. Besides individual support, Anne-Sophie Mutter has invited Nancy to collaborate with her on concert tours around the world.
