¡¡¡¡The prestigious Polish composer Penderecki is an "old friend" of China, and his interest inChinese culture is best represented by the Sixth Symphony premiered in 2017. It is more close to a song cycle with German translations of eight Chinese poemsas text. As a dialog between Eastern and Western cultures, the performance will be conducted by conductor Lü Shao-Chia (familiar to audiencesin Shanghai) and Thomas Bauer as Artist in Residence of SSO for this season. Another highlight of this concert is Symphonia Domestica by Richard Strauss, which displays gorgeous skillof composer in orchestration.

¡¡¡¡Lü Shao-Chia is not only a master to interpret music conception, but also talented conductor.

¡¡¡¡Lü Shao-Chia, born in Taiwan, is noted conductor in Europe, with internationalreputation. After enlightenment educationin piano, he was tutoredby Chen Qiusheng in conducting, then studied in Indiana University in USA and College of Music Viennafor further education. He started his career of conductor after winning first prizes at three renowned international conductor competitionsof Besancon (France), Pedrotti (Italy) and Kondrashin (the Netherlands).

¡¡¡¡Shao-Chia Lü acted as Chief ResidingConductor of Berlin Opera House(1995¡ª1998), Music Director of the Koblenz Theatre(1998-2001), Music Director of Staatsorchester Rheinische Philharmonie Koblenz(1998-2004), and Music Director of Staatsoper Hannover (2001- 2006), and obtained Medalof PeterCornelis grantedby Minister of Culturein May, 2004, which representsfor paramounthonor of the province in culture.

¡¡¡¡Shao-Chia Lü appears regularly as guest-conductor at several world renowned opera houses, including English National Opera, the Theatre de la Monnaie in Brussels, Den Norske Opera in Oslo, the Gothenburg Opera, the Oper Frankfurt, Staatsoper Hamburg and Stuttgart, the Deutsche Oper and Komische Oper Berlin.

¡¡¡¡Alongside his opera activities, Lü is also brilliant in concert podiums. Lü has cooperated with many orchestras, such as Berlin Symphony Orchestra, Southwest Germany Symphony Orchestra and Middle German Symphony Orchestra, Bavaria Radio Symphony Orchestra, FranceNational Symphony Orchestra, Lyon Symphony Orchestra, Durus Symphony Orchestra, StrasbourgSymphony Orchestra, Vienna RadioSymphony Orchestra, Liverpool PhilharmonicOrchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra and Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, the Norwegian and Swedish Radio Orchestra, the Goteborg Sinfoniker, Rome San SiciliaSymphony Orchestra,the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, etc. In Asia, Lu has cooperated with Hong Kong Symphony Orchestra, NHK, New Japan Philharmonic and leading orchestras in Beijing and Shanghai, etc.

¡¡¡¡Shao-Chia Lü has been Music Director of the Taiwan Philharmonic (the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan) since August 2010 and the Principal Conductor of the South Denmark Philharmonic from2014.

¡¡¡¡Baritone: Thomas Bauer

¡¡¡¡Thomas E. Bauer received his earliest musical education as a member of the Regensburg Domspatzen (Cathedral Choir), and went on to study at the University of Music and Theatre in Munich.

¡¡¡¡As a popular concert vocalist in the world, he has performedwith many orchestras and conductors, including the Boston Symphony (Bernard Haitink), Concentus Musicus Wien (Nikolaus Harnoncourt), Filarmonica della Scala (Zubin Mehta), Leipzig Gewandhaus (Herbert Blomstedt, Riccardo Chailly, Sir John Eliot Gardiner), and the National Symphony in Washington, DC (Iván Fischer), North German Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra (Thomas Hengelbrock), Zurich Opera Orchestra (Adam Fisher)and Zurich City Hall Orchestra (SIR Roger Norrington). Recently, he appeared in Schubert¡¯s Lazarus at the Salzburg Festival under the baton of Ingo Metzmacher,cooperated with the Berlin Philharmonic to sing in Schoenberg¡¯s Jakobsleiter.Furthermore, he sang in the world première of Jörg Widmann¡¯s oratorio Arche conducted by Kent Nagano for the inauguration of Hamburg¡¯s new auditorium, the Elbphilharmonie.

¡¡¡¡In the 2018-2019 season, performances of Thomas E. Bauer as guest include Brahms¡¯ German Requiemconducted by Daniel Reussinthe Gstaad Menuhin Festival, the Britten¡¯s War Requiem conducted by Philippe Herreweghewith the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, the Van Parys¡¯s War Requiem conducted by Hugh Wolffwith the Belgian National Orchestra, Mahler¡¯s Songs of a Wayfarer conducted by Giordano Bellincampiwith the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra, Jörg Widmann¡¯s Das heiße Herz conducted by Simone Young with the Leipzig MDR RSO, the Benjamin Symphonycomposed and conducted by composer Peter Ruzicka with the Frankfurt HR RSO, Bach¡¯s St John Passion conducted by Andreas Spering with the Berlin Tonkünstler Orchestra, and the Rimsky-Korsakov¡¯s Mozart and Salieri conducted by Ainars Rubikis with the Bamberg Symphony.

¡¡¡¡He will also tour with the ensembles Anima Eterna, Musik Podium Stuttgart, Ensemble Pygmalion, and Les Violons du Roy.

¡¡¡¡In this season,he is invited to performrepertoires with Shanghai Symphony Orchestra many times as Resident Artist of SSO, such as Mahler¡¯s Songs of a Wayfarer conducted by Long Yu, Penderecki¡¯s Six Chinese Songs conducted by Shao-Chia Lü, and Mahler¡¯s Rückert-Lieder conducted by Jukka Pekka Saraste.

¡¡¡¡Thomas E. Bauer also enjoys considerable success in the song genre: he performs frequently with fortepiano specialist Jos van Immerseel. He also collaborates regularlywith pianistor composer Kit Armstrong, with whom he has given a series of recitals featuring Armstrong¡¯s Bach transcriptions (for instance, at Berlin Konzerthaus and at the Bayerischer Rundfunk m Munich). In August 2018,they will perform their ¡°Reflections on Bach¡± at the Moselle Music Festival and at the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Music Festival.

¡¡¡¡On the opera stage, Thomas E. Bauer¡¯s recent performance in Zimmerman¡¯s Die Soldaten at La Scala in Milan (Alvis Hermanis/Ingo Metzmacher) was warmly received.

¡¡¡¡He has sung several world premières of operas, and was awarded the prestigious Schneider-Schott Music Prize. He also collaborates closely with renowned Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki.

¡¡¡¡Thomas E. Bauer¡¯s CD productions have received a number of prestigious awards.

¡¡¡¡He is the initiator and artistic director of successful Konzerthaus auditorium project in Blaibach (Bavarian Forest), which was opened in 2014 and has won a series of prizes.
