  Western Prints Exhibition:

2011 marks the centennial anniversary of the Revolution of 1911, which was an important turning point in Chinese history as it led China onto the road of rejuvenation. In the form of western print, this exhibition serves as a record of the social situation in Shanghai and even the whole country in the early 19th century, reflecting China’s suffering and determination during that tough period. These original prints are in the form of single pieces, books and popular illustrated periodicals, while the printing techniques include block, etching and copper-plate. Most of the works are from the Western perspectives, with Chinese figures in the works often depicted in a western style.

Historical Photos of the Old Summer Palace by Ernst Ohlmer

German photographer Ohlmer took these photos in 1873, 12 years after the old Summer Palace had been destroyed. Although there are only a dozen photos displayed in this exhibition, these valuable archives serve as a record of the humiliation that China suffered a century ago and a warning to the later generation. Framed in the original glass negative and enlarged to 30 x 40 inches, these photos are reproduced and printed by MUSE photography production. Some photos are even partially enlarged to capture the details of the ruin caused.
